Get hands-on and give back to the environment this spring by joining the 2021 Scenic Rim BioBlitz, running from 30 October to 19 November 2021.
Scenic Rim Regional Council, in partnership with Watergum, invites locals of all ages and backgrounds to come together as citizen scientists to help collect vital species data in the Scenic Rim.
Mayor Greg Christensen said this will be the second BioBlitz event in the Scenic Rim.
“It’s no secret that our region is home to some of the most spectacular flora and fauna in Australia and is an area of great environmental significance, home to six national parks and the UNESCO World Heritage Area Gondwana Rainforests,” he said.
“However, much of our region has not been surveyed before which is why the BioBlitz is so important in assisting wildlife experts and scientists to gain a more comprehensive understanding of our natural landscape.
“Across four days, volunteers will have the opportunity to learn from the experts, participate in nine biodiversity surveys in the field using the iNaturalist app and gain a better understanding and appreciation of our local plant and animal species.
“You definitely don’t have to be a scientist to get involved, we need community members of all ages, backgrounds and skills to come together and be a part of something big.
“Our local event forms part of the Great Southern Bioblitz, an international period of biological surveying which aims to record all the living species within areas across the Southern Hemisphere, and I can’t wait to see our region play our part.
“There are so many creatures that scientists are still discovering every day, so don’t miss your chance to get involved and join forces with the rest of the Southern Hemisphere to learn more about our natural surrounds right on our doorstep.”
Watergum’s Executive Officer Rosalinde Brinkman encourages all members in the Scenic Rim area to get outside and get involved in developing their knowledge and appreciate of the natural world.
“BioBlitz are fun especially when you can discover creatures in your own backyard, you will be amazing at how much you can find around your own home and local park,” she said.
“We want the Scenic Rim community to have lots of fun, learn valuable skills and to be a part of something real!”
The 2021 Scenic Rim BioBlitz highlights Council’s ongoing commitment to conservation and enhancement of the region’s natural resources and environment.
Dates of the three Scenic Rim BioBlitz events are:
- 30-31 October at Burnett Creek
- 12 November at Duck Creek Road
- 19 November at Beechmont
