Council Targets Community And Business With Diverse National Recycling Week Program
Scenic Rim Regional Council has stepped up its programming for National Recycling Week in 2021, with a themed business breakfast, youth focused programs in schools and libraries, and community-wide promotion of the Garage Sale Trail. Fun and education the key to fishing events targeting Carp and Tilapia.
The main event is the Garage Sale Trail with three consecutive weekends of activities.
It’s the nation’s biggest Council-supported community powered program, with Scenic Rim joining other Councils and communities across Australia to reduce waste to landfill and reuse where possible.
Scenic Rim residents can access a variety of free, online Garage Sale Trail masterclasses about how to re-home, re-love and re-purpose things with fashion, finance and sustainability experts on 6-7 November.
The following two weekends, 13-14 November and 20-21 November, are the dates for the Garage Sale Trail itself, where residents can be sellers and host a private garage sale or support the program as shoppers.
Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said waste is everyone’s business and there is something for everyone during National Recycling Week, ranging from educational and fun youth events to practical and motivational sessions for business owners.
“I am passionate about waste policy and this Council is too, with the recently adopted Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy 2021-2026 that aligns with Queensland’s vision to progress towards a zero-waste society where waste is avoided, reused and recycled to the greatest possible extent,” Cr Christensen said.
“Council is inviting residents to register for the Garage Sale Trail, either as sellers or shoppers, in our effort to change attitudes to waste with a focus on reuse options and benefits of a circular economy.
“In the Scenic Rim roughly 20,000 tonnes of waste goes to landfill every year, so as part of Council’s Waste Education Program we launched a ‘Reimagine Waste’ Poster Competition for children of all ages to share their ideas about how to reuse, recycle or repurpose waste destined for landfill.
“It’s great to see those entries coming in, and with a few weeks still to go, I’d like to encourage parents and teachers to get involved and encourage students to enter this poster competition.
“A highlight of the program will be the free Scenic Rim Business Breakfast, aptly named ‘Talkin’ Trash’ on Friday 19 November at The Centre, Beaudesert.
“Come and listen to the experiences of a panel of local businesses that are benefiting by limiting their waste, and industry professionals with knowledge of waste segregation approaches, storage, products and technologies, with an opportunity for questions from the floor.
“Events like National Recycling Week are important to champion efforts to further increase our recycling and resource recovery and reduce our waste to landfill because success will rely on a collaborative effort from Council, businesses and residents.”
